ChatGPT Instant Checkout: A Shopify Guide
What ChatGPT Instant Checkout needs from your Shopify store — Shop Pay, guest checkout, clean PDPs — and how to get ready in an afternoon.
ChatGPT can now buy things. When a shopper asks it to find a pair of running shoes, it doesn't just hand back ten links — it can complete the checkout inside the chat. For Shopify merchants, that's a new sales channel that opens or closes based on a handful of technical choices already sitting in your store settings.
Here's what Instant Checkout actually needs from your store, and the order to fix it in.
1. Turn on Shop Pay
Instant Checkout rides on Shop Pay's tokenized payment rails. If Shop Pay isn't enabled on your store, the agent can't complete the purchase — it stops at the cart. Go to Settings → Payments → Shop Pay and switch it on. This is the single biggest unlock.
2. Allow guest checkout
Agents don't have your customer's password. If your store requires an account to check out, every agent-driven sale dies at the login wall. Under Settings → Checkout, set customer accounts to "Optional" or "Not required."
3. Remove pre-checkout modals
Newsletter pop-ups, age gates, region selectors, and cart upsell modals are murder on agent flow. The agent sees them as unexpected DOM and either gives up or picks the wrong option. Audit every interstitial between "add to cart" and "place order" and remove anything that isn't legally required.
4. Make product data unambiguous
One title, one price, one set of variants, and stock visible without clicking. If your PDP hides the price behind a "configure" step or the variant selector is a custom widget, the agent will either pick wrong or skip your store entirely.
5. Publish a clean returns policy
Agents read your policy pages before recommending a purchase. A vague or missing returns policy is treated as a risk signal and quietly demotes your store in the agent's ranking. A two-paragraph plain-English policy beats a wall of legalese.
How this maps to your Daeri score
All five of these land in the Action Surfacedimension of your Agent-Readiness Score — the part that measures whether an agent can actually complete a purchase, not just look at one. Stores that fix the first three usually see their Action Surface score jump 20–30 points overnight.
